How to Spot and Prevent ATM Skimmers: A Staff Training Guide

Written by the myFloridaATM.com install team — Winter Park-based, ATM-only techs with 10 years and 75+ installs across Central Florida. Last updated October 19, 2026.

How do you spot a skimmer on an ATM?

Short answer: Check the card reader and keypad for anything loose, bulky, misaligned or a different color, look for tiny holes or cameras above the keypad, and gently wiggle the card slot — a real reader does not move. If something looks wrong, take the ATM out of service and call your provider and local police. Installing a skimmer is a crime under Florida law.

The Central Florida Angle

Skimmers are a real issue around Central Florida’s tourist corridors, where thousands of out-of-town cards pass through every day:

  • International Drive, US-192 and I-4 exit stores are higher-risk.
  • 24-hour stores see most tampering overnight.
  • Busy events — holiday weekends, Bike Week — give criminals cover.

Who do I call if I find a skimmer in Orlando?

Call your local police department or sheriff’s office and your ATM provider.

Daily 30-Second Staff Check

  1. Wiggle the card reader — it should not move
  2. Press around the keypad edges — no raised overlay
  3. Look above the keypad for pinhole cameras
  4. Compare the machine to a photo of how it should look
  5. Check for adhesive residue or scratches around panels

Prevention

  • Place the ATM in staff and camera view
  • Use EMV readers and encrypted PIN pads
  • Add anti-skimming hardware at high-risk sites
  • Keep a reference photo at the register
  • Inspect after every shift change at 24-hour stores

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do if I find a skimmer?

Don’t remove it with bare hands if you can avoid it; take the ATM out of service, call local police and your ATM provider, and preserve camera footage.

Do EMV ATMs prevent skimming?

EMV reduces counterfeit-card fraud but does not stop all skimming. Physical checks are still needed.

How often should staff check the ATM?

At least daily, and at every shift change for 24-hour locations.
