How ATM Processing Works: Interchange, Surcharge & Settlement Explained

Written by the myFloridaATM.com install team — Winter Park-based, ATM-only techs with 10 years and 75+ installs across Central Florida. Last updated October 16, 2026.

How does ATM processing work?

Short answer: When a customer withdraws cash, the ATM sends the request through a processor and card network to the customer’s bank for approval. After the cash is dispensed, the processor settles the withdrawal amount plus your surcharge to your business bank account, usually within one to two business days. Separately, interchange is paid by the card issuer and may be shared with the ATM owner depending on the agreement.

The Central Florida Angle

For Central Florida owners, the practical points:

  • Settlement goes to your business account in about one to two business days.
  • Uptime matters more than anything — a cellular modem keeps you online during storm outages.
  • Keep your settlement reports; they’re what you’ll need if a deposit looks wrong.

Why was my ATM deposit smaller than expected?

Check whether processing fees were deducted and whether a holiday delayed settlement. If it still looks wrong, call your processor.
