ADA Requirements for ATMs: A Placement Checklist

What are the ADA requirements for ATMs?
Short answer: Under the 2010 ADA Standards, ATMs must have controls within a wheelchair user’s reach range, clear floor space for a forward or side approach, a tactile keypad, and speech output through a headphone jack so the machine can be used without sight. Placement matters as much as the machine — a compliant ATM in a blocked corner can still fail.
The Central Florida Angle
In Central Florida, accessibility matters for a large customer base — retirees around Ocala and The Villages, and visitors using mobility scooters at theme-park area hotels.
- Keep a clear path from the door — no displays blocking the approach.
- Avoid placing the ATM on a step or raised platform.
- Make sure glare from storefront glass doesn’t wash out the screen.
Does an older ATM meet ADA rules?
Many older machines don’t meet current standards. Ask us to check your model.
